This privacy policy has been compiled to better serve those who are concerned with how their ‘Personally Identifiable Information’ (PII) is being used online. PII is information that can be used on its own or with other information to identify, contact, or locate a single person, or to identify an individual in context. Please read this privacy policy carefully to get a clear understanding of how I collect, use, protect or otherwise handle your Personally Identifiable Information in accordance with my website.
What personal data is collected and why
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site the data shown in the comments form is collected, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Media
If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.
Contact Forms
If you use my contact form to get in touch with me, the information you submit (name [can be a pseudonym], e-mail address, and any other information you choose to include) will be stored on my e-mail server. Your IP address and browser user agent string will also be collected to help spam detection. This information will not be used for marketing purposes or to add you to any mailing lists.
Newsletter Sign-ups
My newsletter is hosted on MailerLite. You can find their Privacy Policy and the types of data they collect here.
Cookies
If you leave a comment on this site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
Cookies from Facebook may be stored on your computer via Facebook’s Custom Audience Pixel tool, which is utilized on this website. You may disable this setting via the privacy settings on your Facebook account, currently located at this link.
Embedded Content from Other Websites
Pages on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Advertising and Analytics
This website uses Facebook Custom Audience Pixel in order to serve you advertisements that are relevant to your interests. This service tracks user behavior after a user has been redirected to the provider’s website by clicking on a Facebook ad, in order to measure the effectiveness of Facebook ads for statistical and market research purposes. This data is anonymous to me and I cannot see the personal data of an individual user; however, this data is stored and processed by Facebook. Facebook may link this information to your Facebook account and also use it for its own promotional purposes, in accordance with Facebook’s Data Usage Policy. If you would like to disable this service, you can do so via your Facebook settings (currently located at this link).
Who your data is shared with
I do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer to outside parties your Personally Identifiable Information and will not unless I provide users with advance notice. This does not include website hosting partners and other parties who assist me in operating this website, conducting my business, or serving my users, so long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential. I may also release information when its release is appropriate to comply with the law, enforce site policies, or protect my or others’ rights, property or safety.
How long your data is retained
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
What rights you have over your data
If you have left comments on this site, used my contact form to get in touch with me, or subscribed to my newsletter, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to me. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
